Do size and location matter?

It may seem obvious but the larger the skylight the greater the amount of light transferred into your home. The direction your skylight faces will also
have an effect on the amount
of light you receive. This does not mean if your roof is not facing north it's not worth installing a skylight, it just will not be as bright for such a long period. To increase the amount of light with your skylight
being on the southern side of the roof, you can have a
slightly larger skylight installed.

Your colour scheme will also affect the light. Light furnishings, walls, floors etc. will reflecting light, making the skylight more effective.

What is a 'Tubular' skylight?
Tubular skylights consist of a circular transparent dome on the roof, a rigid or flexi-tube light shaft and a diffuser in the ceiling. The rigid 'tube' is likely to be more effective because it sides are smooth and will reflect light into your home more efficiently. These skylights are generally 250mm & 400mm in diameter. The flexi-tube skylights range from approx. 250mm to 500mm in diameter. Generally speaking, the larger the shaft the greater the amount of light received, but this is not always so (see next question). One advantage in flexi-tube skylights is when the roof-space is so obstructed with roof timbers that the other type can't be fitted at all or without altering the timbers in the roof. However, once you introduce twist and turns in a skylight shaft the light transfer is considerably reduced.

Will my skylight leak?
Your skylight could leak if it is broken by direct force such as somebody walking on the roof and stepping on it.
If the skylight has been installed correctly it should not leak. The 'Suntrenz SuperTube' we install has only one roof component, which matches your existing roof profile and is least likely to leak. These are made to fit most concrete tile roofs, steel dekra tiles, and corrugated roofs.

How will I know which size skylight to choose?
Here are some approximate sizes that might help you decide. These statistics are for 'closed shaft' skylights in Southern Hemisphere homes. You may need two skylights in some large rooms.

  • WC., Bathroom, Hallway - 400x400mm; 600 x 400mm
  • Small kitchen/bedroom - 400 x 400mm; 600 x 400mm
  • Medium kitchen/lounge room - 600 x 400mm; 600 x 600mm
  • Large rooms - 600 x 600mm; 800 x 600mm

What is the 'Light Shaft'?
The Light Shaft is the most important element in a skylight with regards to conducting light into your home.
A skylight with a long shaft will produce less light than a skylight with a shorter shaft if they are made of the same materials. If your ceilings are higher than normal, then the effect of the skylight will be less because the light has further to travel and spreads out more.
Light shafts with straight sides allow the maximum amount of light through from the water tight device on your roof to the ceiling diffuser. Light shafts made of flexi or concertina duct will bounce much of the light back out through the roof device.
Other factors such as heat insulation, aesthetics, cost, weatherproofing, existing roof structure and personal tastes need to be considered.

What is a diffuser?
A diffuser is a translucent covering, usually set in a frame in a ceiling, used to scatter the light and prevent glare. These are normally made of acrylic for reduced weight and safety reasons.
